Find A Job Online
By Jana BarberioHere is the dream-come-true, technology-driven, job hunt and find-- via the Internet: We give to my brother and his family a home-built computer for Christmas. He creates a sharp and snazzy resume via a Microsoft Word template and throws it out on the World Wide Web for employers in the plastics industry to nibble at. Months and interviews later, he gets the job located in the nearest big city, making twice his normal salary!
The WWW is bulging with jobs and employment sites. It never hurts to keep updated on one’s industry, so try out these sites the next time you find yourself becoming a bit feisty:
Search Engine Sites:
- www.lycos.com --search under the heading “Jobs”
- www.excite.com --search under the heading “Find a job”
- www.yahoo.com --search under the heading “Business and Economy”, then under “Employment and work”
- www.women.com --search under the heading “Career”; the caveat is that the last time I checked it was powered by www.monster.com, another job search page, so you may inadvertently duplicate efforts by searching both
- http://wwwomen.com/career --apparently affiliated with career mosaic, another job site
Employment Search Engines or Sites with Endless Job Links
- www.womcom.org --AWC’s helpful site; search under Careers; there are many job links here
- www.nationjob.com
- www.onlinenews.net/jobs.html --lots of links!
Other Tips:
- Check on-line newspapers such as the Detroit News, L.A. Times or Washington Post. They have job/employment sections.
- Check the state government web pages. Sometimes you have to dig through several web pages to get to the job listings. Two state government sites I checked out were these:
- www.migov.state.mi.us --State of Michigan; go to Department listing to find civil service, then click on State of Michigan vacancy postings
- http://dop.state.md.us/nowopen.html --Maryland Department of Budget & Management, Office of Personnel Services and Benefits, Recruitment and Examination Division (all one title)
- If you’re not able to access a site with a lengthy web page address, try deleting the last segment such as: /nowopen.html. You’ll usually get within a web page or two of what you’re looking for!
- To find more search engines, click on “Search” at the top of your Netscape browser window or search any browser using the words “Search + Engines” or some similar variation.
